Hurricane Melissa Devastates Caribbean Regions
Since the end of October, the powerful storm has relentlessly struck Haiti, Jamaica, and Cuba, bringing widespread ruin and tragic loss of life.
Haiti’s Civil Protection Directorate confirmed that 43 individuals have died, with at least seven others still unaccounted for. Nearly 12,000 residences were inundated, and hundreds more have been either demolished or severely impaired.
In Jamaica, Prime Minister Andrew Holness announced that 32 people have perished and estimated the overall losses to be between $6 billion and $7 billion, describing the catastrophe as “unprecedented.”
“This is not only a humanitarian crisis but also a severe blow to livelihoods and local economies,” Holness declared, emphasizing that major tourist destinations such as Saint Elizabeth, Westmoreland, and Saint James suffered the greatest impact.
Meanwhile, in Cuba, where no official death figures have been made public, the UN has estimated that approximately 2.2 million individuals have been affected. Reports indicate destruction to nearly 60,000 dwellings, 461 medical facilities, and 1,552 educational institutions.
